Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (June 17, 2020) – Tucker Boulton needs laps to regain the comfortable feeling he had in a sprint car.
Boulton, who was out for two months because of burns to 70 percent of his legs, recently returned, but he battled engines woes during his first night out and spent another week on the shelf waiting to get it back.
Boulton got his powerplant last Thursday and went to work getting it back in his 305ci winged sprint car to run the next two nights at a pair of Arkansas tracks.
That work was rewarded. Not only did the 17-year-old get some valuable track time, he led laps and landed his first top-five finish of the season on Friday at Crowley’s Ridge Raceway in Paragould. Boulton added a top-10 run the next night at Riverside International Speedway.
“We’re still working on getting my legs under me and getting used to the car,” he said. “It’s going a little smoother than we expected, except for the motor problems. It’s feeling like it did last year at this point.
“It’s important getting all of these laps. That’s why we are entering all of the sprint car classes when we go to a race. We want to get as many laps as possible and prepare through seat time and experience.”
Boulton started on the pole of his heat race Friday night and he hung on for the win. In the feature, he started fourth on the grid and got to the lead before a lapped car crossed him up and dropped him to a third-place finish.
Boulton again had a solid effort on Saturday at Riverside International Speedway. He moved forward in his heat race, starting fourth and finishing second. Unfortunately, Boulton got caught in a chain-reaction incident and spun in the feature. He battled back to record a respectable 10th-place result.
“I’ve been competing with myself on being more comfortable passing cars and throwing slide jobs,” he said. “This week was very important. I’m so much more confident now.”
Boulton will take that confidence to Riverside International Speedway this Saturday for the Greg Hodnett Memorial, which features a bigger purse for the 305 sprint car division.
“I’m extremely excited,” said Boulton, who has one top five and two top-10 finishes in three 305 sprint car starts this season. “It’s a big race with a lot of cars and I’m looking forward to dicing it up.”
